I started Tessa’s pregnancy yoga classes when I was 20 weeks pregnant & attended right up to 39 weeks. I found the sessions to have many benefits both physically and mentally. They helped me to maintain my flexibility & offered a simple & achievable form of exercise which were enjoyable all the way through pregnancy. They were not too strenuous & alternative poses/stretches were always offered if needed. Attending yoga alongside regular walking helped me stay fit & healthy throughout my pregnancy.
After each session, I left feeling energised & filled with a great sense of achievement. As a busy primary school teacher & Mummy of a 2 year old, the classes also offered me an hour of calm in my otherwise hectic day. They gave me time to focus & connect with my baby.
The breathing techniques we practiced during yoga helped me greatly throughout my labour. They reminded me to breathe in positivity & direct my energy to my baby, & to breathe away any tension & worries. Yoga introduced me to the power of my breath, which can be useful in many areas of life beyond pregnancy & childbirth.
I did not attend yoga with my first born (now 2) & I definitely noticed the benefits this time round.
During labour, I also played the music which was played throughout our yoga classes, which filled the room with calmness & relaxation & reminded me of all the moments I had spent preparing for that day. Even though my labour ended with the shoulder dystorcia (due to having a very large 9lb14oz baby!), the first stage of labour in the birth pool was helped greatly by my background yoga music & breathing techniques, as well as simple yoga stretches such as shoulder and hip rotations (nothing too strenuous!).
Although my birth didn’t go fully to plan, I am grateful to have still delivered Benjamin naturally with gas & air and an episiotomy, as well as lots of support from my birth partners & the wonderful midwives.
I would definitely recommend Tessa’s pregnancy yoga to all of my pregnant friends, everybody is made to feel so welcome in the sessions and I enjoyed chatting to the other mummies each week, sharing our experiences
